Joshua 1:6
In today’s verse of study, God speaks directly to Joshua, urging him to be strong and courageous. This command comes immediately after the assurance of God’s unfailing presence. It’s a divine reminder that, although God is with us, we still have a role to play in His plans.
But why does Joshua need strength and courage if the Lord is already with him? Shouldn’t God handle everything? This question highlights a crucial aspect of our walk with God. While God promises His presence and support, He also calls us to step out in faith, embracing the responsibilities He gives us.
The repeated encouragements to Joshua in this chapter—three times from God (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9) and once from the people (Joshua 1:18)—indicate that Joshua may have been fearful of his new leadership role. This new responsibility was daunting, and God knew Joshua needed both divine assurance and a call to personal courage.
God’s command for Joshua to be strong and courageous wasn’t about Joshua mustering up strength on his own. Instead, it was a call to rely on God’s strength. As Paul later explains in Ephesians 6:10, we are to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Our strength and courage come from trusting in God’s power, not our own.
This pattern is essential for all believers. We must recognize that while God’s presence is guaranteed, our active faith and reliance on His strength are necessary. We are called to step forward with the confidence that God is with us, empowering us to accomplish His purposes.
Heavenly Father, I thank you for your promise to always be with me. Help me to find my strength and courage in you alone. When I face daunting tasks and responsibilities, remind me that I am not alone, and that your power is sufficient for every challenge. Teach me to rely on your might rather than my own abilities. Fill me with your courage and help me to step out in faith, trusting that you will lead and guide me. May my life reflect your strength and bring glory to your name.
