Born to Be Our Savior

Today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” — Luke 2:11 (NASB)

Why was Jesus born? Beyond the where, when, and how of His birth, the ultimate reason is clear: He came to save us. The angelic proclamation in Luke 2:11 declares this truth plainly—Jesus was born to be the Savior. This message resounds throughout Scripture and was recognized by those who awaited the Messiah.

Mary, in her song of praise, rejoiced in “God my Savior.” Zechariah, filled with the Holy Spirit, prophesied about the “horn of salvation.” Simeon, holding the infant Jesus, praised God for allowing him to see His salvation. The birth of Jesus marked the fulfillment of God’s eternal plan to redeem humanity. Salvation is not merely an action God performs but a reflection of who He is. Salvation flows from the very nature of the triune God—Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

In the Old Testament, God is repeatedly revealed as a Savior. He fought for Israel, delivered them from their enemies, and rescued them from their sins. David, in Psalm 51, prayed for the restoration of the joy of God’s salvation. These glimpses of God’s saving nature pointed forward to the ultimate expression of His grace in Jesus Christ.

Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem wasn’t just the arrival of a historical figure; it was the culmination of God’s saving work. By taking on human flesh, Jesus bridged the gap between a holy God and sinful humanity. He came to seek and save the lost, to reconcile us to God, and to offer us eternal life. His birth was the dawn of salvation, a gift freely given to all who believe in Him.

This Christmas, let us remember why He came. Jesus didn’t just come to inspire or to be admired; He came to save. As we reflect on the baby in the manger, may we also see the Savior on the cross and the risen Lord who reigns. Let us respond with worship and gratitude, declaring this good news to those who need to hear it.
