Call for Capable Hands

Ezra 8:18 (NIV)
“Because the gracious hand of our God was on us, they brought us Sherebiah, a capable man, from the descendants of Levi…”

As Ezra prepared to lead the exiles back to Jerusalem, he paused to take inventory. He had people, he had resources, and he had royal permission-but something was missing: Levites, the men God had specifically assigned to assist with worship and temple service. Ezra couldn’t move forward without the right people in the right places. So he called for them. And God, in His faithfulness, provided capable hands.

There’s a powerful lesson here. In God’s kingdom, not everyone is called to do everything-but everyone is called to do something. Ezra didn’t just need warm bodies; he needed willing and equipped people who could fulfill a specific role in God’s work. The same is true today. Whether it’s teaching, serving, encouraging, giving, or leading, God calls and equips people for unique tasks that advance His mission. The question isn’t just, “Are you able?” but “Are you available?”

Sometimes we disqualify ourselves because we think we’re not as gifted or visible as others. But Ezra didn’t go looking for superstars-he needed faithful hands. And when the call went out, Sherebiah and others responded. They left comfort behind to step into calling. That’s what availability looks like-willingness to say, “Here I am, Lord. Use me.”

So what’s in your hands today? Maybe you’re gifted in hospitality, administration, music, mentoring, or prayer. Don’t underestimate how important your role is. God’s work moves forward through capable and willing hands just like yours. The call is still going out-will you answer?

Prayer:
Lord, I want to be available for your work. Thank you for gifting me with something that can make a difference. Show me where I’m needed and give me the courage to say yes, even when it stretches me. Use my hands, my heart, and my life to build what matters to you.
