Proverbs 19:11 (NKJV)
The discretion of a man makes him slow to anger,
And his glory is to overlook a transgression.
Offense is one of the quickest ways love is disrupted. It creeps in quietly, settles deeply, and hardens the heart if left unchecked. Scripture reminds us that wisdom slows us down and love gives us the strength to overlook certain wrongs. Not every offense deserves a reaction, and not every irritation requires confrontation.
Choosing love over offense does not mean pretending nothing happened or denying pain. It means refusing to let every slight control your emotions or define your relationships. Love exercises discretion. It discerns what must be addressed and what can be released. Maturity is often revealed not by how quickly we respond, but by what we choose to ignore.
God models this kind of love toward us daily. He overlooks many shortcomings, extends patience repeatedly, and refuses to treat us according to every failure. If God counted every offense, none of us could stand. His love teaches us restraint, mercy, and perspective.
Offense thrives where pride is easily wounded. Love, however, is secure. It does not need constant validation or defense. When love governs the heart, we are less reactive and more reflective. We pause. We pray. We choose peace over the satisfaction of being right.
Living offended keeps the heart tense and guarded. Choosing love creates space for peace and growth. It protects relationships from unnecessary damage and frees the soul from carrying resentment. Sometimes, overlooking a transgression is not avoidance, it is wisdom at work.
This morning, ask yourself what offenses you may be holding onto unnecessarily. Invite God to give you discretion, patience, and grace. Choosing love over offense is not losing ground, it is gaining freedom.
Prayer
Father, help me to choose love over offense and wisdom over reaction. Teach me to be slow to anger and quick to release what does not deserve space in my heart. Heal any resentment I am carrying and help me to reflect your patience and grace in my relationships. I trust you to guard my heart and lead me in peace. Amen.
