Confidence in God, Not in Flesh

Key Verse:
“For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” – Philippians 3:3 (KJV)

In Philippians 3:3-4, the Apostle Paul talks about having reasons to place confidence in the flesh, but he chooses not to. He had all the qualifications, achievements, and abilities that could have given him a sense of pride, yet he decided to place no confidence in them. Instead, Paul recognized that true confidence comes from God alone.

Let’s consider a scenario: imagine you’re a trained electrician, and you’re appointed as the maintenance manager for the church. If a piece of equipment breaks down, would you pray before attempting to fix it? Or would you rely on your training and expertise to handle it? It’s easy to see how experts in any field may be tempted to rely solely on their skills rather than seeking God’s guidance. Similarly, if God calls you to preach, and you’re naturally gifted in public speaking or are an English professor, will you depend on your natural ability, or will you humble yourself and seek God’s help through prayer and guidance?

It is dangerous to bring natural confidence into the things of the anointing. While your expertise may work in the world, it will never carry the same weight in God’s Kingdom. Moses, despite being mighty in words and deeds, was brought to a place where he had to depend completely on God. When God called him to speak to Pharaoh, Moses hesitated and declared, “I can’t speak” (Exodus 4:10). God had intentionally brought him to a place of humility so that Moses would no longer trust in his own abilities but trust entirely in God.

This is a powerful lesson for all of us: Greatness in God’s Kingdom is not achieved through our own abilities or credentials but by our total dependence on God. He may use our skills and talents, but they should never replace the need for His guidance and anointing. In the world, your abilities may help you succeed for a time, but in the Kingdom of God, it’s only by humbling ourselves and depending fully on God that we can truly experience His greatness.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for the talents and abilities you’ve given me. I choose to place no confidence in the flesh but to rely completely on you. Help me to humble myself and depend on your guidance in every area of my life. Teach me to surrender my natural abilities and trust in your power to work through me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
