“By night I went out through the Valley Gate toward the Jackal Well and the Dung Gate, examining the walls of Jerusalem, which had been broken down, and its gates, which had been destroyed by fire.” – Nehemiah 2:13
For the first time, Nehemiah saw with his own eyes the devastation that had only been described to him. The broken walls of Jerusalem weren’t just ruins—they symbolised the insecurity, fear, and poverty that had taken root in the lives of the people. This wasn’t just a physical problem; it was a spiritual one as well. As he surveyed the scene, his heart must have broken over the magnitude of what needed to be done. No doubt, tears would have welled up in his eyes as he realised just how deep the damage went.
Nehemiah understood that he couldn’t move forward until he had a clear picture of the situation. God had called him to rebuild, but before the work could begin, he needed to count the cost. He had the heart, faith, and vision to see the project through, but it was essential for him to assess what the task would require in terms of time, effort, resources, and leadership. In our own lives, when God gives us a calling, it’s important to take time to evaluate what lies ahead. Often, we’re quick to jump into action, but we must first pause and ask, “What will this cost me?”
Jesus spoke of this principle when He said, “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won’t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?” (Luke 14:28). Just like Nehemiah, we must understand that while God gives us the vision, it’s our responsibility to prepare ourselves for the journey ahead. Counting the cost doesn’t mean doubting the calling; it means walking into it with wisdom and awareness, knowing that God equips those He calls, but there is still work to be done.
Are you ready to step into the vision God has given you? Have you taken the time to assess what it will require of you? Whether it’s a new ministry, a career change, or even mending a broken relationship, counting the cost is a step of wisdom. Don’t be discouraged by the weight of the task ahead; instead, trust that God will walk with you every step of the way, just as He was with Nehemiah as he faced the ruins of Jerusalem.
PRAYER
Lord, as I step into the calling You have placed on my life, help me to count the cost with wisdom and faith. Reveal the areas where I need to prepare, and give me the strength to face the challenges ahead. I trust that You will provide everything I need to fulfil the vision You have given me. Help me not to be overwhelmed by the task but to rely on Your guidance and provision every step of the way.
