Crossing the Jordan: Leaving the Wilderness Behind

“The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord stopped in the middle of the Jordan and stood on dry ground, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground.” – Joshua 3:17

Imagine standing on the banks of the Jordan River, feeling both excitement and apprehension. For forty years, you and your people have wandered in the desert, holding onto a promise that one day you would enter a land flowing with milk and honey. Now, with the waters of the Jordan standing before you, God calls you to step forward in faith. It’s a pivotal moment: leave the wilderness behind and cross into the Promised Land.

This crossing was no casual stroll; the river was at flood stage, making it a raging barrier to the land beyond. Yet, as the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant into the water, the river miraculously parted—an unmistakable sign that God was making a way. Sometimes in our own lives, we face barriers that seem insurmountable: financial struggles, health challenges, or nagging doubts about our future. But just as God parted the Jordan for the Israelites, He can open doors for you to step into new seasons of blessing.

Leaving the wilderness behind also involves leaving behind old habits and fears that have kept us stagnant. The Israelites had to trust God enough to move forward, even when the circumstances seemed daunting. Are there areas where you feel stuck or hesitant, fearing that you’re not ready for the next step? God’s invitation is clear: trust His Word, believe His promises, and take that step of faith.

As you consider your own “Jordan River,” remember that God’s presence goes before you. He holds back the waters of doubt, fear, and uncertainty, guiding you onto the path He’s prepared. Crossing over may not be easy, but God’s promises are worth every step. With each faithful act of obedience, you leave a bit more of your wilderness behind and move closer to the abundant life He has in store.

Lord, thank you for reminding me that you make a way when the path ahead seems blocked. I give you my fears and doubts, trusting that you go before me as I step into your promises. Help me to leave the wilderness of old habits and worries behind, and to walk courageously where you lead. May my faith in you grow stronger with each step I take. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
