And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.’” – Exodus 34:6
It’s striking to realize that God describes Himself as compassionate, gracious, and slow to anger—especially when we consider how often the Israelites rebelled against Him. From constructing the golden calf to frequent grumblings in the wilderness, the people regularly tested God’s patience. Yet each time, He chose mercy instead of condemnation, showing a love so powerful that it transcended their failures.
We sometimes see stubbornness as a minor character flaw, but it can lead us into direct conflict with God’s will. When we insist on doing things our own way, we’re not so different from the Israelites who doubted God’s plan and pursued idols instead. Even so, Exodus 34:6 reminds us that God remains patient, always offering us grace despite our wayward hearts.
In our daily lives, we can become impatient with ourselves or others when mistakes pile up. But God’s example of patience and long-suffering invites us to respond differently. He doesn’t merely tolerate us; He actively pursues us with love. Recognizing the depth of His mercy can soften our own stubbornness, drawing us into a more humble, obedient walk with Him.
If you feel stuck in a cycle of mistakes or find yourself repeatedly resisting God’s direction, take heart. His patience toward you has not run out. Turn to Him for guidance, remembering that the same compassionate, gracious God who forgave Israel’s rebellion still extends His arms to you today.
Prayer:
Lord, thank you for being so patient with me, even when I choose my own path over yours. Forgive my stubbornness, and soften my heart to yield to your loving guidance. Help me reflect your patience toward others, recognizing that your mercy never fails. I want to walk in your ways, trusting in your love and faithfulness. Amen.
