The Israelites, too, looked back at Egypt, craving the food of their enslavers. And perhaps you’ve done it too—nostalgia rewriting the past, making you question if obeying God was the right choice.
Sometimes, the pull of the past is strongest when the present doesn’t meet our expectations. Maybe you left a steady job because God called you to start a business, but now you’re struggling to make ends meet. Or perhaps you walked away from a relationship with someone you deeply cared for because they didn’t share your faith, and now loneliness whispers doubts into your heart. These moments make us question if we made the right choice. But here’s the truth: if God called you out, what’s ahead is far better than what’s behind.
Looking back is dangerous because it shifts our focus away from God’s promises and onto our perceived losses. Lot’s wife’s backward glance wasn’t just about nostalgia—it was about longing for what God had already judged as unfit for her future. When you dwell on the past, you risk missing what God is doing now and where He is taking you. The God who called you out of your past knows exactly where He’s leading you, and His plans are always for your good.
So today, resist the urge to look back. Trust that God’s purpose for you is greater than anything you’ve left behind. Don’t let doubt or nostalgia rob you of the future He has for you. The best is yet to come, and you’ll never find it by looking over your shoulder.
Lord, I confess that I sometimes look back, longing for what you’ve called me out of. Help me to trust your plan for my life, even when the present feels uncertain. Give me the strength to focus on your promises and the courage to move forward with faith. Thank you for reminding me that what’s ahead is far greater than what’s behind.
