Don’t Hesitate

“When he hesitated, the men grasped his hand and the hands of his wife and of his two daughters and led them safely out of the city, for the Lord was merciful to them.” – Genesis 19:16 (NIV)

Have you ever hesitated, not because you didn’t believe God, but because stepping into the unknown felt overwhelming? Lot found himself in that very place. He knew Sodom was doomed—he even tried to convince his sons-in-law to leave. Yet, when it was time to go, Lot hesitated. Not because he doubted God, but because Sodom was his home, the life he had built. The uncertainty of what came next made him linger, and it almost cost him everything.

Isn’t that just like us? Leaving the familiar, even when it’s not good for us, can feel terrifying. An abusive relationship, a toxic work environment, or even an unfruitful habit can feel safer than stepping into the unknown. Change requires courage, and trusting God when He doesn’t give us all the details is no small task. Lot’s hesitation reminds us that God’s mercy often intervenes even when we’re too scared to move.

But here’s the truth: God’s plans are always for your good, even when they seem uncertain. His mercy pulled Lot and his family out of Sodom, and His mercy will pull you out of anything holding you back. Like Abram, Noah, and the Israelites, God’s direction often comes with few details about the destination. But every time, those who trusted Him found that the unknown with God was better than the familiar without Him.

So, what is God calling you to leave behind? Is it a toxic relationship, a stagnant situation, or a mindset that no longer serves His purpose for you? Don’t let hesitation rob you of the future God has planned. Trust Him, even when the next step isn’t clear. The God who called you out will faithfully lead you in.

PRAYER

Lord, I often hesitate when you call me to step into the unknown. I confess that I sometimes cling to the familiar, even when it’s not your best for me. Help me to trust you completely, knowing that your plans for me are good. Thank you for your mercy that gently leads me when I falter. Give me the courage to take the steps you are calling me to today.
