Embracing Divine Guidance: The Role of Human Helpers

One of the biggest decisions of my life was probably relocating my entire family from Nigeria to Canada, especially given the many things surrounding the move and how unreasonable it looked. Interestingly, the major word of God that kept me going came from a friend not even directly from me. That’s because if we have our heart in the right place, there is a place of God using men to provide additional details to his leading in our lives. 

In Numbers 10:29-34, there’s a short story about Hobab, Moses’ brother-in-law, who initially refused to continue the journey with the Israelites through the wilderness. However, Moses persuaded him to come along, recognizing the value of having a human guide to assist them on their journey.

While the Israelites were led by the cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night, indicating God’s presence and direction, Moses understood that they still needed human assistance for specific details and practical guidance along the way. In the same way, in our Christian walk, God is our primary source of guidance through His Word, His Spirit, and His providence. However, He often uses human helpers to provide additional insight, wisdom, and direction in our lives.

We must be sensitive enough to recognize when God is sending someone to help us navigate through specific situations or seasons in our lives. Whether it is a trusted mentor, a wise counselor, a supportive friend, or a fellow believer, these human helpers can offer valuable guidance, encouragement, and support as we journey through life.

The apostle Paul recognized the importance of human helpers in the Christian community when he wrote, “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2, ESV). Just as Hobab was willing to accompany the Israelites and assist them on their journey, so too should we be willing to accept help from others and offer help in return.

Let us cultivate a spirit of humility and openness, recognizing that God often works through human vessels to accomplish His purposes and provide for our needs. Let us be sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit and willing to receive guidance and support from those whom God sends our way.

As we embrace both divine and human guidance in our lives, may we experience greater clarity, direction, and blessings on our journey of faith.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for your constant presence and guidance in my life. Help me to be sensitive to your leading through the Holy Spirit and to recognize the human helpers you send to assist me along the way. Give me the wisdom to discern your voice and the humility to receive guidance and support from others. Help me to walk in obedience and faith, trusting in your provision and guidance at every step of my journey, in Jesus’ name.
