Fix the Wall in Front of Your Own House

“Above the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house.” – Nehemiah 3:28

At first glance, the mention of priests repairing the wall in front of their own homes may seem insignificant or even lazy. Why fix only the part of the wall closest to their houses? But the truth is, this strategy was brilliant. If each person took responsibility for the broken wall directly in front of them, the entire city would be restored quickly. Nehemiah understood that when everyone plays their part—no matter how small it seems—the bigger picture comes together beautifully. The wall would not remain broken if each person took responsibility.

This speaks to us today. We often look for big projects or grand gestures to make an impact in the world, but the most significant contributions start close to home. Every societal issue we face has a root somewhere nearby—a broken family, a neglected community, or a lost child. If we all started by fixing the “wall” directly in front of us—our homes, our families, our communities—we would see transformation far beyond what we could imagine. Each person’s responsibility, when carried out with passion and commitment, becomes part of a greater solution.

Consider the broken walls around you: the family relationships that need mending, the personal habits that need reforming, and the children in your community who are within your immediate reach. When we take action, we set in motion a ripple effect that can impact an entire society. The priests in Nehemiah’s time understood that fixing the wall in front of their homes wasn’t a small task—it was their responsibility to the larger community. In the same way, we are called to build up the areas God has placed before us, starting with our own families, churches, and neighbourhoods.

We often think that our contributions are too small to make a difference, but imagine what could happen if each of us repaired the “wall” nearest to us. The brokenness we see in society today—whether in education, crime, or families—can only be healed when individuals take responsibility where they are. God is not calling us to fix everything all at once, but He is asking us to start where we are.

Let us commit ourselves to the areas God has entrusted to us. Whether it’s being more present with our families, volunteering in our local church, or mentoring someone in need, God can use these efforts to rebuild the larger walls of our society. The world may seem overwhelming, but like Nehemiah, we can start by taking responsibility for what’s right in front of us.
