God’s Word Never Fails

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.

Exodus 14:26

From yesterday’s passage, we saw how God’s almighty hand caused the east wind to blow upon the Red Sea and parted it into two until there was dry ground in the middle of it for the Israelites to pass through. The bible says that “…the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left” (Exodus 14:22)

The Egyptians saw this miracle and they assumed they could replicate it. “The Egyptians pursued them, and all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion. He jammed[b] the wheels of their chariots so that they had difficulty driving. And the Egyptians said, “Let’s get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.” (Exodus 14:23-25)

At this point, the Egyptian army had already gotten the memo. They knew God was fighting for Israel and that the only reasonable thing to do was to turn back, but it was already too late. God wasn’t going to spare them. It still baffles me why a merciful God would not give these men another chance. The truth is that we can’t question God’s sovereignty, but more to that is the fact that these men had witnessed ten different plagues in the past, which were not sufficient proof of God’s power to call them to repentance. These men were not going to change no matter how many near-death escape opportunities they had, yet they wouldn’t stop persecuting God’s people. For God, it was judgement time, but he put that judgement in Moses’ hand. Then the Lord said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen. Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and at daybreak, the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were fleeing toward[c] it, and the Lord swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen—the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived. (Exodus 14:26-28)

When Moses promised the Israelites in verse 14 that God would fight for them, and that they would see the Egyptians no more, it sounded impossible. However, Moses spoke in faith even though the situation didn’t support his claim. In the end, God fought for them and without raising any arms, God destroyed the Egyptian army.

God’s word never fails. “The whole world, earth and sky, will be destroyed, but the words I have said will never be destroyed!” (Matthew 24:35 ICB). Whatever you are going through right now, just hold on to God’s word. In the end, His word will vindicate you.
