How I Lost My Way

Sometimes last year, I drove my wife to attend her colleague’s wedding somewhere in Ketu. Interestingly, neither of us can find our way to the venue so we relied on Google map and thanks to the map it got us to the venue safely. Of course, we had to rely on the map to get us out of the place as well.

After a few minutes of driving, we suddenly arrived a very familiar location and my common sense says to me ‘put off the map to save your battery, you can find your way home from here’ I turned off the map and I started going my own way. I have not driven for 2 minutes when I landed inside a very heavy traffic, I eventually spent about 3 hours plus for a 15 minutes journey. If only I had continued with the map, it would have suggested the fastest route to me based on traffic situation but nay, I followed my own way.

Every time I consider the story of the three Magi in Matthew, it somehow resonates with this experience and more importantly our experiences as believers.

The Magi, for instance, left the East, at the instance of a star point in the direction of Jesus; it was their own map. However, when they got to Jerusalem, they acted like me; they switched off the map and switched on common sense, they became familiar with the road and saw no further need for the divine direction.

When they got to the palace and after many consultations, they came to the conclusion that it was a mistake, they should never have stopped following the star in the first place.

As believers, can we make it part of our resolution never to stop following the star? Sometimes, there will be some good ideas, fantastic offers coming your way, they look too good not to be godly, except they are not; they’re just mere distractions trying to stop you from following the map.

Let God’s word and his holy spirit be your guide. Lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him and he shall direct your path.
