As we continue to examine the seventh sign from Jesus, we saw yesterday that His love is not merely expressed in words but through actions backed by numerous proofs, culminating in His sacrificial death on the Cross. In return, He desires our love and expects it to be demonstrated through our actions. Today, we’ll delve deeper into this context, understanding that Jesus’ love and His desire for our love provide a valuable foundation for interpreting this sign.
Given our understanding of the relationship between this family and Jesus, let’s now explore the circumstances that led to Lazarus’ illness. The sisters, recognizing Jesus’ abilities, decided to send word to Him. This is a common human response: when in need, we turn to trusted friends for help, confident in their capacity to assist us.
Communicating with Jesus from Bethany to Jordan would have taken time, likely a day’s journey. Despite the distance, the sisters’ faith in Jesus’ healing power prompted them to send for Him. However, a surprising turn of events occurred after Jesus received their message. As stated in verse 4, ‘When Jesus heard this, he said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for God’s glory so that God’s Son may be glorified through it.”
This response deviates from what most would expect. Martha and Mary likely anticipated Jesus to immediately leave his current activities and rush to Lazarus’ aid, viewing this as a demonstration of His love. While that would be a valid interpretation, Jesus shows us a more excellent way. He demonstrates that His love for us is ultimately aimed at glorifying God. His death, beatings, resurrection, and ascension all serve this purpose. Wow! What a way to show love!
To achieve this divine glory, Jesus decided to wait two more days. Initially, this might seem counterintuitive as an expression of love. However, we often experience similar situations in our lives, where we place our trust in Jesus for a particular need and yet perceive delays. During these times, we may question His timing. However, as we see here, Jesus’ love is ultimately directed towards glorifying the Father.
While the question of how delays glorify the Father will be addressed in subsequent days, the key point for today is that Jesus is never truly late, even when He is said to be late. His actions are ultimately aimed at glorifying God. These times of perceived delay, though frustrating and potentially faith-testing, ultimately serve to reveal God’s glory within us.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, though I may not understand all the plans You have for me, my life is in your hands, and with the eyes of faith, help me to clearly see that You love me and you want to glorify Yourself in my life
