Jesus, the Eternal Life

but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

John 4:14

Yesterday, we began looking at the various ways Jesus describes Himself in the Book of John, starting with His identity as the Resurrection and the Life. Today, we will continue by examining Jesus as Eternal Life. You might wonder, “Jesus is Eternal Life, how?” But remember, you often quote, “I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” This is also Jesus referring to Himself.

We go through life daily seeking a good life. We struggle each day to improve our circumstances. We study, work, engage in business, help others, deny ourselves, and put ourselves out there because we desire a better life. This pursuit guides our daily living. We are not so different from the Samaritan woman. You might think to yourself that you are loyal to one person or that you would be, but dissatisfaction in life manifests differently for each person. For her, it was about rejection by or rejection of several men. For you, it might be dissatisfaction with what some people, jobs, or businesses can offer. You strive to achieve more and be more. Have you not considered that no matter what you achieve, it will only last for a while, and the desire for more will persist? This is the thirst Jesus talks about. As long as we live on this earth, we will continue to thirst.

But there is a realm where all thirst is satisfied, and it is the realm of eternity. It is a realm of rest and perfection. Jesus introduces Himself to this woman as the one who provides this kind of life, where there is no longer any thirst. In this realm, we are no longer seeking how to live a better life because it is the best life. As a believer reading this, Jesus is telling you that His life is the best kind of life that quenches every dissatisfaction and eliminates the need for seeking a better life because it is the peak—there is nothing better. Life with God is the best. Many times, we struggle because we do not believe this.

Ask yourself, “Do I believe that life with God is the best?” “Do I believe that nothing in this world can satisfy me except life with God?” This is because God has placed eternity in our hearts, and everything we find in this world is only temporary. Nothing temporal can satisfy us; only eternal things can, because that is our true desire.

Therefore, Jesus is the one who truly satisfies, and He is calling you and me to a fellowship with Him where all thirst is quenched, and we walk in the realm of satisfaction. Am I suggesting that we do not need anything else in life? No! On the contrary, we need many things, but none can truly satisfy us. The only reason we are satisfied at any point in life is because we have the one who truly satisfies. So, when you are denied that promotion, when you do not receive the money you expected, or when you do not get the recognition you sought, remember that only Jesus satisfies. And even when you achieve all you want and still feel like you want more, remember that only Jesus satisfies. Not even your spouse or your children can give you satisfaction; only Jesus can. There is nothing more fulfilling than being with Jesus.
