Respect, Responsibility, Romance, Resolve

“However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.” — Ephesians 5:33 (NIV)

Affair-proofing a marriage is not primarily a defensive project, focused exclusively on what must be avoided or guarded against. It is, at least as much, a constructive project, the active cultivation of qualities that make a marriage genuinely thriving and resilient. Four pillars offer a practical framework for this cultivation: respect, responsibility, romance, and resolve, each addressing a distinct dimension of what keeps a marriage strong over the long term rather than merely intact by default.

Respect, Ephesians 5:33 instructs, flows specifically toward the husband, just as love is specifically directed toward the wife, though both qualities are, in practice, owed by each spouse to the other in the fullest sense. Respect communicates value and esteem, the opposite of contempt, which research on relational breakdown consistently identifies as one of the most corrosive forces a marriage can sustain. A marriage where respect has eroded, where one or both spouses regularly communicate disdain through tone, body language, or outright criticism, becomes fertile ground for the kind of emotional disconnection that often precedes physical infidelity, even when no specific affair is yet underway.

Responsibility, drawn from Philippians 2:4-5, calls each spouse to look not only to their own interests but also to the interests of the other, adopting the same selfless attitude that characterised Christ Jesus. This is a direct counter to the self-focused orientation that adultery represents at its core. A marriage where both spouses are genuinely, consistently attentive to the other’s needs, interests, and wellbeing, rather than treating the relationship primarily as a vehicle for their own satisfaction, builds a kind of mutual investment that makes outside attraction considerably less compelling, because the marriage itself is actively meeting needs that might otherwise go searching elsewhere.

Romance, celebrated unashamedly in Proverbs 5:18-19, calls spouses to rejoice in one another and to remain ever captivated by each other’s love. This is a striking instruction, given how easily long-term relationships can drift toward functional, businesslike coexistence, managing logistics and responsibilities together while the original delight and pursuit that characterised the relationship’s early stages quietly fades. Scripture’s vision for marriage explicitly includes ongoing delight, not merely tolerance or partnership, and the deliberate cultivation of romance, intentional time, attention, and pursuit, is itself a form of affair-proofing, because it keeps the marriage relationship genuinely alive rather than merely administratively functional.

Resolve, finally, drawn from Malachi 2:15-16, calls spouses to guard themselves and remain loyal, a deliberate, ongoing commitment rather than a single decision made once at the wedding altar and then assumed to be permanently settled. Loyalty requires active maintenance, the consistent choice, renewed daily, to remain faithful in thought, attention, and action, rather than drifting passively in whatever direction circumstance or temptation happens to push.

Today, consider these four pillars honestly in the context of your own marriage, or, if you are not currently married, in the relationships you are preparing for or supporting around you. Which of the four, respect, responsibility, romance, or resolve, currently needs the most deliberate investment? Choose one specific, practical action this week to strengthen it.

Prayer

Father, build respect, responsibility, romance, and resolve into my marriage, or into the relationships you are preparing me for. Where any of these four pillars has weakened through neglect, strengthen it through deliberate, daily investment. Help me to look not only to my own interests but genuinely to the interests of my spouse, the way Christ looked to ours. In Jesus’ name, amen.
