Then I said to them, ‘You see the trouble we are in: Jerusalem lies in ruins, and its gates have been burned with fire. Come, let us rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and we will no longer be in disgrace.'” – Nehemiah 2:17
In life and leadership, it’s easy to think we must carry the burden alone. Sometimes, leaders take on too much responsibility, believing they have to be the solution to every problem. But Nehemiah teaches us something different. When he saw the broken-down walls of Jerusalem, his instinct wasn’t to fix everything by himself. Instead, he said, “Come, let us rebuild the wall.” Nehemiah invited the people into the process, understanding that they needed to be part of the solution. Partnership was key to rebuilding the city and restoring hope.
This invitation to work together wasn’t a sign of weakness; it was a testament to Nehemiah’s wisdom as a leader. He knew that while he had the favour of the king and the resources to begin the work, the heart of the people needed to be engaged. Nehemiah believed that if God could move the heart of a pagan king to support the rebuilding, He could also stir the hearts of His own people to participate. This kind of leadership, rooted in partnership, brought about true restoration.
In the same way, God designed our lives for partnership. Even though leaders might feel the urge to carry the weight alone, God’s plan often involves working with others. We need to be willing to say, “Come, let us build,” instead of trying to do it all ourselves. Whether in our homes, workplaces, or churches, we are stronger when we stand together. Nehemiah’s story reminds us that when we partner with others and trust God to work through His people, we can accomplish far more than we ever could alone.
Nehemiah didn’t just want to rebuild walls; he wanted to rebuild the people’s sense of purpose and faith in God. By asking for their help, he gave them ownership in the work. In your own life, think about the people God has placed around you. Are you trying to carry too much alone? Like Nehemiah, invite others to join in the work, trusting that God moves through partnerships to bring about His will.
PRAYER
Lord, help me recognize the importance of partnerships in my life. Teach me to lean on others and invite them into the work You have called me to do. I don’t want to carry these burdens alone, and I trust that You will provide the right people to walk alongside me. Give me the humility to ask for help and the wisdom to value those who stand with me. Thank You for the strength that comes from working together in Your name.
