Lessons from the Wilderness

“And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God acknowledged them.” – Exodus 2:25 (NKJV)

When Moses fled from Egypt into the wilderness, it might have looked like failure. He had gone from the palace to the desert, from being a prince to tending sheep. Yet, what seemed like a setback was really God’s setup. The wilderness wasn’t punishment, it was preparation. For forty years, God shaped Moses in solitude, humility, and dependence. By the time the burning bush appeared, Moses was no longer the impulsive prince but a man ready to be God’s instrument of deliverance.

We often think of wilderness seasons in our own lives as wasted time-dry places where nothing seems to move forward. Maybe you’ve lost a job, a relationship ended, or your prayers feel unanswered. But the truth is, God often does His deepest work in the wilderness. It’s where He strips away distractions, trains our hearts to hear His voice, and builds the character we’ll need for the assignment ahead. Like Moses, what feels like delay is actually divine preparation.

Think about it: if Moses had never spent years in the desert, how would he have led Israel through their wilderness journey? His personal desert became the classroom that prepared him to shepherd an entire nation. In the same way, your current struggles might be equipping you to help others in the future. What you’re learning in private will become the wisdom others need in their journey.

So instead of despising your wilderness, lean into it. Ask, “Lord, what are you teaching me here? How are you shaping me for what’s next?” Remember, God hasn’t forgotten you. He looked upon Israel, He acknowledged their cries, and He was already raising up a deliverer. The wilderness is not the end of your story; it’s the proving ground for God’s greater purpose.

Prayer:

Father, thank You for reminding me that my wilderness is not punishment but preparation. Teach me to trust You in dry seasons and to see Your hand shaping me for greater things. Help me embrace the lessons of the wilderness so I can be ready for the purpose You’ve prepared for me. In Jesus’ name, amen.
