“Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
Matthew 13:32
Every seed a sower holds can be used for two purposes: planting in the soil or eating as food. He may choose to satisfy his immediate hunger by consuming it but the hunger will return soon because the consumption of seed never fully satisfies any man’s hunger. If he chooses to put it in the soil however, he will immediately go hungry; the hunger will last a while but at harvest, he will be satisfied not only because he will have enough for his consumption but because many more people will find food in the harvest of his seed.
Like the mustard seed, though small, with immense potential, our lives hold similar promise. We can choose to keep them focused solely on personal satisfaction and fleeting joys. Alternatively, we can plant ourselves in the fertile ground of God’s purpose, allowing His grace and love to cultivate something extraordinary.
When we choose to live for God, our lives become like the mustard seed that grows into a large tree. This tree isn’t just for our benefit; it becomes a blessing to others. Its branches provide shade and comfort for those who seek refuge. The birds find a place to perch, symbolising people finding solace and rest in the shelter of lives lived for God.
As we navigate our daily choices, let the mustard seed be a constant reminder. Let’s choose to sow our lives in the fertile soil of God’s kingdom. By doing so, our lives can become a source of blessing, reaching out and touching the lives of those around us. Just as the mustard seed grows into a mighty tree that blesses many, our lives, when surrendered to God, can impact the world around us in ways we can’t even begin to imagine.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank you for the powerful imagery of the mustard seed. Help me to see my life as a seed with great potential. May I choose to plant myself in the soil of Your kingdom, trusting that you will cultivate something beautiful and impactful through me. May my life be a blessing to others, providing shade and comfort to those in need. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen
