Money and Mission: Aligning Finances with Faith

Nehemiah 5:5
“We have had to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. Some of our daughters have already been enslaved, but we are powerless, because our fields and our vineyards belong to others.”

It’s easy to think of finances as just a matter of personal management, disconnected from our spiritual lives. But in Nehemiah’s time, we see how financial decisions affected the people’s ability to serve God and support each other. The Israelites, weighed down by debt, were forced to make devastating choices about their families and futures. They were physically rebuilding Jerusalem’s walls, yet financial bondage threatened to tear down their ability to rebuild spiritually. Similarly, in our lives, every financial choice can either strengthen our walk with God or lead us into unnecessary hardship.

Decisions about money are more than numbers; they reflect priorities, values, and trust. Choices like buying a home, pursuing a career, or setting financial goals should all be viewed through the lens of eternity. When we place God first in these decisions, we create room for His purpose and provision to unfold in ways that draw us closer to Him. Scripture reminds us that if we seek first the kingdom of God, all other things will fall into place. Financial decisions become part of our spiritual journey, impacting the work of God in our lives now and in the years to come.

A big part of keeping our hearts right about finances is through giving. When we give generously to God’s work, we align our resources with His purposes. In the New Testament, giving isn’t about guilt or obligation but about joy, thoughtfulness, and love for God’s kingdom (1 Corinthians 16:1-4, 2 Corinthians 9:7). Regular, cheerful giving can reshape our perspective, helping us see money as a tool for God’s work rather than a source of personal security.

Nehemiah’s story invites us to examine how we view money and to surrender our financial goals to God. As we commit to putting Him first, our financial decisions can bring us closer to God’s heart. Let’s make every financial step one that reflects God’s faithfulness and keeps our priorities aligned with His eternal plans.
