Passing Through Edom: Learning to Trust God’s Detours

“Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so Israel turned away from him.” – Numbers 20:21

Have you ever felt like you were on the “right track” only to have a door slammed in your face? The Israelites knew this feeling all too well. On their journey to the Promised Land, they requested permission to travel through Edom—only to be flatly denied. Suddenly, the straightforward path became complicated. This detour wasn’t part of their original plan, but it was part of God’s.

Sometimes we assume that if something is good and sensible, God will automatically clear the path. Yet, as the Israelites discovered, even reasonable plans can get roadblocked. When doors close, it’s easy to feel frustrated or confused. However, God sees the bigger picture and knows when a “no” can lead to a greater “yes” down the line. In these moments, our faith is stretched as we learn to trust that He has better ways, even if they look longer or more difficult in the short term.

Think about your own life. Maybe you’re facing a detour in your career, a relationship, or a personal goal. It’s tempting to see a closed door as a dead end, but God wants to show you that He can work powerfully through alternate routes. Rather than forcing your way forward, consider asking God for guidance. You may discover unexpected blessings and deeper growth on the path He provides.

The Israelites eventually found their way—just not the way they initially expected. Their detour became another chapter in the story of God’s faithfulness. The same can be true for you. Embrace life’s unexpected turns with confidence that God has not abandoned you. On the contrary, He is leading you toward a destination that reflects His wisdom and love.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for guiding me, even when my plans are disrupted. Help me not to lose heart when I encounter detours. Give me the faith to trust your timing and the humility to follow your lead. Show me the blessings and lessons you have in store on every path you set before me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
