Rich Toward God

This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Luke 12:21

If you have been following our discussion about the rich fool’s parable in the last three days. you likely understand his mistake wasn’t prosperity, but neglecting his relationship with God. He stored up earthly riches without considering the brevity of life or the eternal perspective. His plans for self-indulgence and comfort ended abruptly with God’s unexpected call, revealing his spiritual poverty.

This parable is a powerful reminder for believers today. We must examine our hearts and priorities. Are we rich toward God, or consumed by worldly gain? Are we investing in eternal treasures or temporary wealth?

Being rich toward God goes beyond money. It’s about surrendering your heart to Him. It means seeking first the kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33), prioritising spiritual growth, and investing your time, talents, and resources in furthering God’s purposes on earth.

As followers of Christ, we are called to be generous – to God’s kingdom and others. This includes supporting ministries and initiatives that advance the gospel, caring for the marginalised, and sharing the love of Christ with those in need.

Finally, being rich toward God means living with an eternal perspective, recognizing that our true citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). We are called to lay up treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal (Matthew 6:20).

Let us, therefore, heed the warning of the rich fool’s tragic end and strive to be rich toward God in all areas of our lives. May we invest in eternal treasures, practice generosity, and live with hearts open to God’s leading and kingdom purposes. In doing so, we align ourselves with God’s will and experience the true fulfilment that comes from living a life of eternal significance.
