Shining as Lights in the World

Give Aaron the following instructions: When you set up the seven lamps in the lampstand, place them so their light shines forward in front of the lampstand.”

Numbers 8:2 NLT

In Numbers 8:1-4, God instructed Aaron through Moses to set up the seven lamps on the lampstand in the tabernacle. These lamps were to be arranged in such a way that their light would shine forward in front of the lampstand. This instruction echoes the earlier description and construction of the lampstand in Exodus 25:31-40.

The lampstand served a crucial purpose in the tabernacle—it was not meant to generate light but hold the light (lamp) and make the light more visible. The purpose of the lamps was to illuminate the space around them, allowing the light to shine forth and dispel darkness.

Similarly, as followers of Christ, we are called to be lights in the world. Jesus Himself declared, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). Just as the lampstand was designed to make the light more visible, our role is to reflect and radiate the light of Christ to those around us.

The apostle Paul exhorted believers to “shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life” (Philippians 2:15-16). Our lives are to be a testimony to the transformative power of the gospel, illuminating the darkness of sin and pointing others to the source of true light—Jesus Christ.

We have been entrusted with the precious message of salvation, and it is our responsibility to share it boldly and compassionately with those around us. Whether through our words, actions, or attitudes, we have the opportunity to shine the light of Christ into the lives of those who are lost and in need of hope.

So, as we go about our daily lives today, let us remember that we are called to shine brightly for Jesus. May our lives be a reflection of His love, grace, and truth, drawing others into the warmth and brightness of His presence. Let us faithfully fulfill our role as bearers of the light, making Christ known to a world in desperate need of His saving grace.

PRAYER

Thank you God for calling me to be light in this world, reflecting the brightness of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to shine brightly for you, illuminating the darkness around me with your love and truth. Grant me boldness and wisdom as I share the message of salvation with those who are lost and in need of your grace. May my life bring glory to your name and lead others into a deeper relationship with you in Jesus’ name.
