Stable in the Storm

“But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.” – James 1:6 (NIV)

Have you ever stood at the edge of the ocean and watched the waves crash? One moment they’re rising high, the next they’re retreating into the sea. There’s beauty in their motion, but also a kind of chaos-never still, never settled. James says that’s what our lives look like when we doubt God. We become like waves-blown and tossed, moved by emotions, circumstances, and fears.

It’s not that questions are wrong. God welcomes our honest hearts. But doubt-persistent, root-level unbelief-keeps us from receiving the very things we’re asking for. It’s like trying to fill a cup with a hole in the bottom. God is pouring out wisdom and direction, but doubt drains it before we can receive it. That’s why James says such a person shouldn’t expect to receive anything-they’re divided, unstable, and constantly shifting.

The solution isn’t to muster up “perfect faith,” but to anchor ourselves in God’s nature. He is steady even when we’re shaky. He doesn’t change when our feelings fluctuate. When we truly believe that He is who He says He is-faithful, generous, good-we find peace in the middle of life’s storms. Faith doesn’t mean you feel strong; it means you trust a strong God.

So how do you calm the storm inside? Start by planting your feet on the Rock. Speak God’s truth louder than your fear. Let His promises anchor your heart. Don’t be blown around by opinions, options, or obstacles. Believe-really believe-that God is for you, and you’ll find stability even in the roughest waters.

Prayer:
Lord, I don’t want to live like a wave tossed by doubt. Anchor my heart in your truth. Teach me to trust your character, even when I can’t see the outcome. Make me stable in the storm, rooted in faith and grounded in your Word. Amen.
