But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise, you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it.
— Joshua 6:18
As the walls of Jericho were about to fall, Joshua issued a stern command to the people of Israel: stay away from the accursed things. These items included idols and objects associated with the demonic and depraved worship practices of the Canaanites. The severe judgement on Jericho and all of Canaan was not because they were merely in the way of Israel’s conquest. It was because the Canaanites were in total rebellion against God, deeply involved in occult practices and idolatry. The patience of God had been extended to them for a long time, giving them the opportunity to repent (Genesis 15:16). Because they did not, judgement finally came through the armies of Israel.
Joshua’s warning was a vital instruction for the Israelites. The consequences of disobeying this command would soon become painfully clear in the sin of Achan, as detailed in the following chapter. Achan’s act of taking some of the accursed things led to Israel’s defeat in their next battle and brought trouble upon the entire camp. This shows the seriousness with which God views obedience and the danger of allowing sin into our lives.
Today, God continues to warn us to stay away from sin and anything that can lead us into disobedience. We might be tempted by various “accursed things” in our lives, whether they be material possessions, harmful relationships, or practices that draw us away from God’s will. It’s crucial to remember that God knows best and His warnings are always for our good. Disobedience might seem appealing in the short term, but it ultimately leads to destruction and trouble.
We must heed God’s instructions and trust that He is leading us away from danger and towards His blessings. Our obedience to God is not only for our benefit but also for the good of those around us. Just as Achan’s sin affected the entire camp of Israel, our actions can impact our families, communities, and even our nations. By staying faithful to God’s commands, we position ourselves to receive His protection and blessings.
Heavenly Father, Thank you for your loving guidance and warnings. Help me to stay away from anything that draws me away from you and leads me into disobedience. Give me the wisdom to recognize the “accursed things” in my life and the strength to avoid them. May my actions always reflect my trust in you and my desire to follow your will. Protect me from the consequences of sin and help me to lead a life that brings glory to your name.
