Step 4: Personalize the Promise

 “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.” – Psalm 23:1

There is a powerful connection between being persuaded by God’s promise and personalizing it. If you are not fully convinced and persuaded by God’s Word, it will be difficult to make that promise feel personal to you. Think of a woman who, after getting married, still responds to her maiden name when called in public. Initially, it takes a few reminders for her to respond to her new surname, but over time, she naturally responds to her married name without thinking. This process of adjusting and internalizing is similar to personalizing God’s promises in your life.

Personalizing God’s promises requires a deep persuasion that they are meant for you. David beautifully demonstrates this in Psalm 23, where he declares, “The Lord is my shepherd.” he doesn’t say “our shepherd,” which would have been correct, but instead, he makes it personal. David was so persuaded by God’s promise that it became a living reality to him. To David, the Lord wasn’t just a shepherd in a general sense; the Lord was his Shepherd, guiding and providing for him personally.

Consider Sarah’s reaction when God promised her a son. At first, she laughed, not because she didn’t want the promise, but because she had not yet personalized it. She couldn’t fully believe it for herself because it seemed impossible. But when God reaffirmed His promise, Sarah became persuaded, and she eventually personalized that promise. From that point on, she could see herself as the mother of Isaac.

You must do the same: take God’s promises, prophecies, and covenants, and make them personal. See them as words spoken to you, not just to others or to humanity in general. When you personalize God’s promises, they become more than just words—they become your lived reality.

Prayer:
Father, thank you for your promises that are true for my life. help me to personalize every word you have spoken to me. I choose to fully believe that your promises are meant for me, and I receive them into my heart. As I personalize your Word, I trust that you will bring it to pass in my life. Teach me to make your promises a living part of my everyday experience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
