Yesterday, we began the conversation about the believer’s lifestyle of prayer by considering the content of the disciple’s prayer. The first thing we observed was that it began with worship. The other thing that sets the disciples’ prayer apart is that they prayed according to the Scriptures. They drew from the wisdom and promises found in God’s Word, specifically referencing Psalms 2:1-2 in their prayer.
This aspect of their prayer teaches us a valuable lesson about the importance of praying according to God’s Word. When we align our prayers with Scripture, we are not only acknowledging the authority and truth of God’s Word, but we are also tapping into its power and effectiveness.
The Bible is filled with promises, principles, and examples of prayer that we can draw upon in our own prayer lives. When we pray according to God’s Word, we are praying in alignment with His will, which increases the likelihood of our prayers being answered. As 1 John 5:14-15 tells us, when we pray according to God’s will, He hears us and grants our requests.
Furthermore, praying Scripture allows us to pray with confidence and boldness. We can rest assured that God’s Word will not return to Him void but will accomplish what He desires (Isaiah 55:11). By incorporating Scripture into our prayers, we are anchoring our petitions in the unchanging truth of God’s Word, rather than relying solely on our own limited understanding or desires.
Praying according to God’s Word also helps to align our hearts and minds with His purposes and priorities. As we meditate on Scripture and allow it to shape our prayers, we become more attuned to God’s leading and more sensitive to His voice. Our prayers become less focused on our own agendas and more centred on God’s kingdom purposes.
As we follow the example of the disciples and pray according to God’s Word, let us approach our Heavenly Father with faith, knowing that He hears and answers the prayers of His children who seek His will. May our prayers be grounded in Scripture, filled with faith, and guided by the Holy Spirit.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of your Word, which serves as a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. Help me to treasure your Word in my heart and to pray according to its wisdom and truth. Give me a hunger and thirst for your Word, that I may continually draw upon its promises and principles in my prayer life. Teach me to pray in alignment with your will, that my prayers may be effective and pleasing in your sight. May your Word dwell richly in me, shaping my thoughts, words, and actions. In Jesus’ name.
