The Bronze Serpent: Looking to Jesus for Healing

“The Lord said to Moses, ‘Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.’ So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.” – Numbers 21:8-9

Imagine being in the Israelites’ position: surrounded by venomous snakes, with no earthly remedy to stop the deadly bites. Suddenly, God provides a surprising solution—a bronze serpent lifted high on a pole. All they had to do was look at it in faith and they would be healed. It must have seemed strange, yet it worked because it was God’s chosen method of deliverance.

This bronze serpent foreshadows Jesus’ work on the cross. In John 3:14-15, Jesus draws a parallel between the serpent on the pole and Himself: “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.” When we turn our eyes to Christ, lifted up on the cross for our sins, we receive spiritual healing—salvation and forgiveness. But He doesn’t just stop at our spiritual needs; God also cares about our physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

It’s easy to try to fix our problems on our own—self-help books, social media tips, or sheer willpower—but the core of our healing lies in Jesus. The Israelites couldn’t heal themselves; they needed to trust in God’s provision. Likewise, when we’re “bitten” by the stresses, temptations, or pains of life, our primary response should be to look to Christ. He is our ultimate source of strength, hope, and restoration.

Where do you need healing today? Is it in your body, your mind, your relationships? Whatever your struggle, remember that the same God who turned the Israelites’ death sentence into a miracle of life stands ready to meet you where you are. Turn your gaze upon Jesus. As you do, allow His grace and power to fill you with hope and bring healing to every area of your life.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for providing healing and salvation through Jesus. Help me to lift my eyes to Him in faith, just as the Israelites looked at the bronze serpent. I trust you with my hurts, my fears, and my failures. Fill me with your grace and power, and bring healing to every part of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
