The Lord Will Fight For You

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still

Exodus 14:14

Isn’t it interesting that after numerous signs, wonders and a series of plagues upon Egypt, Pharaoh still refused to let the Israelites go? Though he finally released them when God’s hand became too heavy upon him and the entire nation, he pursued them again after granting them freedom. Here we see a picture of what the devil does to a believer. One might think that once a person is saved from the grip of sin and the devil’s slavery, he would relent and leave them be. However, this is not the case. The devil will launch a new form of attack to get this believer back into slavery. He never gives up.  

How does the devil attack the believer after he has been saved? He comes in many ways, sometimes as doubts. For every time you fall short of a moral standard, he comes to assure you that you were never saved in the first place and that, like a leopard, your spots cannot be cleansed. He makes you doubt God’s promises about the destination of the believer, just like he did to Israel. Suddenly, the people started saying “Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!” (Exodus 14:12)

Sometimes, he attacks us physically or materially –  for instance, by attacking our health or finances – making it seem like God is not able to save us and deliberately positioning people who, though continuing in evil ways, are still seemingly better than us. In those moments, we are quick to forget that “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4). 

So, how does God fight for us in those moments? His methods are diverse. Sometimes, he may shield us with an impenetrable barrier, deflecting any attack that comes our way. Other times, something may begin to slip through, heading directly towards us. But even then, God will not abandon us. He will step in front of us, intercepting the threat and facing it head-on, engaging in battle on our behalf.

Sometimes, God will fight the actual battle through you, while other times He will simply tell you to hold your position and do absolutely nothing. Then, He will move Himself to completely eliminate the attack coming against you. This is where God reveals how powerful and awesome He truly is, personally stepping in to protect you.

While we may never fully predict how God will act in our lives, one thing remains certain: the Lord will fight for you.
