For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord – Romans 8:38-39 (NKJV)
The power of God’s love is truly remarkable. Consider this: when a criminal faces the consequences of their actions, somewhere there is a mother who still loves them. This is the essence of love-it gives someone what they do not deserve. And when we look at God’s love for us, we realize that His love is not based on our actions, but on His nature. Nothing-absolutely nothing-can separate us from the love of Christ. This is the bedrock of our faith.
As Christians, our pursuit should not be to get God to love us. His love for us is already established, and it’s unconditional. If you are focused on trying to earn God’s love, you will never grow spiritually. Christianity is not about trying to convince God to love you; it is about responding to the love He has already freely given. A Christian who is constantly seeking God’s love will remain stagnant, confused, and fail to move forward in their spiritual journey.
God’s love for us is not dependent on our efforts or behaviours. It is a love that transcends our actions, a love that is always present. As God told Jeremiah, I have loved you with an everlasting love (Jeremiah 31:3), He says the same to us today. His love is constant and unchanging, regardless of our performance.
Even those who choose to reject God and end up in hell are still loved by God. In fact, it is God’s love that determines the outcome of their fate. The reality is that the holiness of God is so consuming that a sinner in His presence would find it more unbearable than any torment in hell. God is a consuming fire, and His holiness cannot coexist with sin. If a sinner were to enter heaven without being cleansed, they would experience an overwhelming discomfort far greater than the fires of hell. This is why, throughout the Old Testament, even the most righteous men fell to their knees in repentance when they encountered God’s holiness. His presence is far more intense than anything they could bear on their own.
This understanding of God’s love should humble us and encourage us. His love is not about our worth or merit-it’s about His character. Let us rest in the security of His love and allow it to transform our lives, knowing that we are deeply loved by our Heavenly Father.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for your incredible, unconditional love. I rest in the assurance that nothing can separate me from your love. Help me to understand that I cannot earn your love, but that I am loved because of who you are. Teach me to live in response to your love, and to grow in my walk with you. I want to live a life that pleases you, not because I am striving for love, but because I am secure in the love you have already shown me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
