“He replied, ‘Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, “Move from here to there,” and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.’” — Matthew 17:20
Have you ever faced a situation that felt like a mountain—immovable, overwhelming, and impossible to overcome? Whether it’s a broken relationship, financial strain, or a health crisis, these “mountains” can leave us feeling powerless. But in Matthew 17:20, Jesus offers an incredible promise: even faith as small as a mustard seed can move mountains. It’s not about the size of our faith but the power of the God we place it in.
A mustard seed is tiny—barely visible when held in your hand. Jesus uses this image to show us that we don’t need perfect or gigantic faith; we just need to trust Him, no matter how small that trust may feel. When we pray boldly, believing in God’s ability to work, we unleash His power in our impossible situations. The mountains in our lives may not move immediately, but through faith-filled prayer, we invite God to act in His perfect timing and way.
Think about the mountains in your life right now. Have you brought them before God in faith? It’s easy to let doubt creep in or to feel like your prayers don’t matter. But God is not asking you to move the mountain yourself—He’s asking you to trust Him to do it. Faith says, “God, I believe you are bigger than this mountain, and I trust you to handle it.” It may start with a whisper, but even that small prayer can set God’s power in motion.
What are you holding back from God today? Jesus reminds us that nothing is impossible when we pray with faith, no matter how small it may seem. Bold prayers rooted in faith acknowledge God’s sovereignty and invite Him to work miracles in our lives. Don’t underestimate what He can do. Offer Him your mustard seed of faith, and watch Him move the mountains you thought would never budge.
Prayer:
Father, thank you for reminding me that even a small amount of faith can move mountains. Help me to trust you with my impossible situations and to pray with boldness and belief. Strengthen my faith, and teach me to rely on your power rather than my own. I know that nothing is impossible for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
