Trusting God When It Doesn’t Make Sense

So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth.

Imagine being a seasoned military commander, preparing your troops for an imminent battle, and then receiving an order that makes absolutely no sense from a strategic standpoint. This was Joshua’s situation. God commanded him to circumcise all the men of fighting age, making them completely vulnerable in enemy territory. This act of obedience would incapacitate his entire fighting force for several days, leaving them defenceless. It was an unmilitary act, yet Joshua obeyed because God said so.

In our lives, we often face similar moments when God’s instructions defy logic or conventional wisdom. These commands may not make economic sense, professional sense, or even common sense. Yet, just as Joshua trusted God and followed His direction, we are called to do the same. Joshua’s obedience was rooted in his deep faith and trust in God’s plan, even when it seemed irrational. He understood that God’s wisdom far surpasses human understanding.

God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). When we are faced with God’s unconventional commands, our response should be one of faith and obedience. Joshua knew that true victory did not depend on military might but on God’s power and presence. By obeying God’s seemingly strange command, Joshua demonstrated his unwavering trust in God’s sovereignty and faithfulness.

As we navigate our own journeys, we may encounter situations where God’s instructions challenge our logic and comfort. It is in these moments that our faith is tested and refined. We must remember that God’s plans are always for our good, even when they don’t make sense to us. Like Joshua, we are called to trust and obey, knowing that God sees the bigger picture and has our best interests at heart.
