I’m a strong believer in the anonymous saying that your attitude in life has the capacity to determine your altitude. Watch out for any man who never gives up, one day you’ll be shocked when you see him rise up.

Looking through the book of Luke, there is an inspiring story of what our attitude should be if we hope to win in life. The bible says “Some men took a man who was not able to move his body to Jesus. He was carried on a bed. They looked for a way to take the man into the house where Jesus was. But they could not find a way to take him in because of so many people. They made a hole in the roof over where Jesus stood. Then they let the bed with the sick man on it down before Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the man, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.” (Luke 5:18-20).

Just imagine! These men looked for a way; they tried the door but it was impossible because the crowd was too much, they probably tried the window but it was a dead end. Maybe they tried the emergency exit door but nobody would give them a chance. So they did something radical; they broke through the roof to lower their friend down before Jesus.

What does a roof look like in Jesus’ time and how easy would it be to break through one? Roofs were constructed from beams covered with branches and a thick layer of mud plaster, though the rafters were sometimes supported by a row of pillars along the middle of the room. Cylindrical stone rollers about 60 cm. [23.6 inches] long were used to keep the roofs flat and waterproof, though roofs needed to be re-plastered annually prior to the rainy season to seal cracks which had developed during the summer heat.

Bringing down this kind of room is definitely no child’s play. But the bible says that Jesus saw their faith. These men had made their faith more than just internal, they turned their faith into actual work. The faith of these men was so great that it brought down the strong roof; it was their faith, not their fist that brought down the roof eventually.

So, I say to you this morning that life can be very tough and unfair, most importantly everybody is also trying to succeed the same way you’re trying to succeed so don’t think that everybody will just clear the road for you to pass just like that. Sometimes you have to go radical! If the world won’t give you a door to pass try the window; if the window is blocked try the emergency exit; if the emergency exit is blocked then break the roof!

Don’t ever accept defeat because of one closed door. Keep trying until you finally get the result, one of these days the Lord will bless your faith.
