Happy new year!
January of every year is always a very interesting moment. Information flying everywhere about how you can make the most of the year and especially in the spiritual parlance where we are constantly looking for how to prepare. Sometimes the noise from many directions can be really deafening and confusing that you spend the first quarter of the year finding out what God even want in the first place.
Here’s a good way to simplify it. God wants just two things from you- your ears and your heart.
The first thing God really wants you to do this year is to listen attentively to what he has to say, especially because he has an opinion on everything going on in your life if only you care to ask him. The plan of God is that “Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, This is the way, walk in it,” Whenever you turn to the right hand Or whenever you turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21
This voice of God is constantly speaking to everyone of us but only the children who are rightly positioned and aligned hears it. What better way to make ourselves ready and aligned for hearing than to yield to Solomon’s counsel in Proverbs 3:5-6 “5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight”
Hearing God is one thing though but agreeing with God and demonstrating this acceptance through faith-based actions is even more important. In Exodus 19:7-8 we were told of a simple conversation between Moses and the Israelites “…7So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him. 8And all the people answered together, “We will do everything that the LORD has spoken.” So Moses brought their words back to the LORD”
Of course, if you’re familiar with these guys through the bible, you know they don’t mean what they have just said, before Moses could arrive with the commandments they promised to obey, they broke the very first law that prohibits them from having other gods apart from Yahweh.
It is not just enough that we align our ears sufficiently to hear God this year, we must open our hearts to obey his instructions. If we offer our ears to hear him and our heart to obey, then we can be truly blessed. May God open our ears to hear and our hearts not only to merely understand but to be willing to obey.
