What’s in Your Hand?

“So the Lord said to him, ‘What is that in your hand?’ He said, ‘A rod.’” – Exodus 4:2 (NKJV)

When God called Moses to confront Pharaoh, Moses felt unqualified and unprepared. In his doubt, God asked a simple but powerful question: “What is that in your hand?” All Moses had was a shepherd’s staff-an ordinary stick used to guide sheep. Yet in God’s hands, that staff would part the Red Sea, bring water from a rock, and display God’s power before kings. The lesson is clear: God doesn’t need us to have something extraordinary; He just asks us to surrender what we already have.

How often do we disqualify ourselves because we think we don’t have enough? Maybe you feel you lack resources, connections, or skills. But God’s question to Moses is also to us: “What’s in your hand?” Maybe it’s your voice, your time, your influence, or your talent. Ordinary things become extraordinary when they are placed in the hands of an extraordinary God.

The truth is, God delights in using simple things to accomplish great purposes. Five loaves and two fish fed thousands. A sling and a stone brought down a giant. And a wooden staff became the symbol of God’s deliverance for Israel. Your “rod” may look small, but when surrendered, it carries the potential to impact lives far beyond what you imagine.

So, what’s in your hand today? Don’t wait for something bigger or better before stepping into obedience. Offer what you already have, and watch God multiply it. He’s not asking for what you don’t have-He’s asking for what you do. And when you surrender it, He takes the ordinary and turns it into a testimony of His power.

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for reminding me that you can use what I already have. Help me not to underestimate the ordinary gifts in my hand, but to surrender them fully to you. Use my life, my skills, and my resources to display your power and bring glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, amen.
