When Last Did You Celebrate Passover?

The Lord spoke to Moses in the Desert of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt. He said, “Have the Israelites celebrate the Passover at the appointed time.

Numbers 9:1-2

That’s funny right? Asking you about the Passover celebration! Of course, I know you’re not a jew. However, the idea behind passover is deeper than just an event to be celebrated once a year, when we understand it then we will realize that it should be an everyday celebration. 

In Numbers 9:1-5, God told Moses to remind the Israelites to celebrate the remembrance of the Passover. The Passover was a significant event in Israel’s history, serving as a powerful reminder of God’s deliverance and protection. The Passover commemorated the night when God “passed over” the homes of the Israelites while bringing judgment upon the land of Egypt. The blood of the lamb, applied to the doorposts of the Israelite homes, served as a sign of faith and obedience. When the angel of God’s judgment saw the blood, it “passed over” and spared the households covered by the blood of the lamb.

This judgment passed over the Israelites, and the subsequent deliverance from slavery became a central part of Israel’s identity and faith. It was a continual reminder of God’s faithfulness, provision, and protection in times of trouble.

In the New Testament, we see the fulfillment of the Passover sacrifice in the person of Jesus Christ. The apostle Paul writes, “For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed” (1 Corinthians 5:7). Through His death on the cross, Jesus became the ultimate sacrifice whose blood covers and protects His people from the judgment of sin and death.

But how serious is sin anyways, for some people born under a good moral upbringing, you probably didn’t get the chance to get enslaved in some sinful habits. It might be easier for you to underestimate the power of sin compared to people who were rescued from serious addictions and chains of sin. However, the truth is you weren’t exactly different from them. A similar end (judgment) awaits us all, not primarily because of what we have done or not done but because of who we are (sinners by nature). We did nothing to become sinners and could do nothing to escape it; all men were equally helpless and hopeless irrespective of all the good they have done. But Jesus’ sacrificial death provides forgiveness of sins and deliverance from the bondage of sin and death.

Just as the Israelites were commanded to continually remember the Passover, so too are we called to remember and celebrate the work of Jesus on the cross. We should wake up every morning and thank him for saving us among other things. Have you done that today?

Heavenly Father, thank you for the precious gift of salvation through the sacrifice of your Son, Jesus Christ. Help me to continually remember and celebrate the work of the cross, acknowledging my deliverance from sin and death. Help me to live each day in grateful obedience to you, walking in the freedom and forgiveness that Jesus’ blood provides. Let my life be a testimony to your faithfulness and grace, in Jesus’ name.
