But Peter and John replied, “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to him? You be the judges! ‘

Today is our final conversation about the story of the healing at the Beautiful Gate. If you have been following, you would have realised that the disciples had come under intense criticism not just for the healing but for using the opportunity to preach the name of Jesus. However, the unreasonable demands of the Jewish council in chapter 4 of Acts was probably the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
Acts 4:19, we witness a powerful declaration of faith and obedience from Peter and John in the face of opposition. Confronted by the Jewish council and commanded to cease preaching in the name of Jesus, they respond with unwavering resolve: “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
This bold declaration encapsulates a fundamental principle of the Christian faith: our allegiance and obedience belong first and foremost to God. In the face of pressure, persecution, or opposition from earthly authorities, our primary duty is to obey the commands of our Heavenly Father, even if it means standing against the tide of popular opinion or facing personal consequences.
The disciples’ refusal to comply with the council’s demand serves as a powerful reminder that our ultimate loyalty is to God alone. While earthly authorities may wield influence and power, they are subject to the authority of the Almighty. As followers of Christ, we are called to align our lives and decisions with His will, even when it contradicts the expectations or mandates of human authorities.
Choosing to obey God rather than men requires courage, faith, and a deep conviction in the truth of God’s Word. It may entail sacrifices, risks, and hardships, but the rewards of obedience to God far outweigh the temporal benefits offered by human approval or compliance.
As Christians, we are called to be courageous and uncompromising in our obedience to God’s commands, even in the face of opposition or persecution. Our commitment to following Christ should be unwavering, grounded in the assurance that His ways are higher than our ways, and His plans are ultimately for our good and His glory.
PRAYER
Heavenly Father, thank you for the example of boldness and obedience displayed by Peter and John in Acts 4:19. Give me the courage and faith to prioritise obedience to your Word above all else, even when faced with opposition or pressure from earthly authorities. Help me to trust in your wisdom and sovereignty, knowing that your ways are always best. Grant me the strength to stand firm in my convictions and to boldly proclaim your truth, regardless of the cost.
