The enemy does not send generic temptation. He sends bespoke temptation, tailor-made for your specific weaknesses, your particular history, your individual appetites, and your personal pressure points.
He tempted Jesus with bread, but only after forty days of fasting, when hunger was at its most acute. He tempted David with Bathsheba while David was idle on his rooftop, at the precise season when he should have been at war and was not. He tempted Peter with fear precisely when Peter was standing in the cold courtyard of the very place where Jesus was being tried, surrounded by people he did not know, under a kind of social pressure he was not prepared for.
In every case, the temptation was not random. It was studied. Timed. Targeted.
I once attended a church barbecue fellowship where we were grilling chicken. We had seasoned the pieces and laid them out on the grill, and before the fire was lit, something interesting happened. The flies appeared. Not one or two, but a persistent cloud of them, drawn irresistibly to the smell of the seasoned meat. We tried everything: waving, covering, chasing. They kept returning. But the moment we lit the fire and the grill got hot, every single fly disappeared. Not reduced in number. Gone. Entirely. They did not come back until the fire was out and the food was being served.
In that moment, the words of Paul in Galatians 5:16 clicked for me in a way they never had before: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” I had always read that as an instruction: try harder to walk in the Spirit so you can avoid sin. But I began to understand it differently. When the fire is present, the flies cannot operate. It is not that walking in the Spirit makes you strong enough to resist temptation by willpower. It is that the Spirit’s presence changes the entire environment. What the flesh found attractive becomes suddenly, completely, unappealing.
The battle against temptation is not primarily about saying no. It is about staying so close to God that the counterfeit loses its appeal. You do not fight fire with willpower. You fight fire with fire. When the Holy Spirit is the dominant presence in your inner life, the carefully customized bait the enemy has prepared for you lands on ground that can no longer receive it.
Today, do not just resolve to resist temptation. Choose instead to pursue God’s presence. Open your Bible. Worship. Pray in the Spirit. Feed your spirit something greater than what the flesh is craving. The flies do not disappear because you chase them. They disappear because the fire comes.
Prayer
Father, I have been trying to fight temptation with willpower and losing. I have been saying no when I should have been saying yes to you. Today I choose to pursue your presence rather than manage my appetites. Come and fill every room of my inner life. Let the fire of your Spirit be so present, so alive in me, that what the enemy has carefully prepared as bait lands on ground that can no longer receive it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
