Love as a Fruit of the Spirit

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
—Galatians 5:22 (NIV)

When you think about the evidence of God’s work in your life, does love come to mind? Galatians 5:22 highlights love as the first fruit of the Spirit, setting the foundation for all the others. This isn’t a love we manufacture on our own—it’s the result of the Holy Spirit working in us, transforming us to reflect the heart of Christ. How is the Spirit cultivating love in your life today?

Love as a fruit of the Spirit is more than a fleeting feeling. It’s an active expression that shows up in how we treat others, even when it’s inconvenient or undeserved. This kind of love is patient with a friend who’s slow to change, kind to a stranger who may never return the favour, and forgiving toward someone who has hurt us. It’s not based on what others do but on who God is in us.

Cultivating love means staying connected to the Holy Spirit. Just as a tree needs sunlight, water, and nutrients to grow fruit, we need daily communion with God through prayer, His Word, and obedience to His leading. As we submit to His Spirit, He empowers us to love in ways we couldn’t on our own. What practical steps can you take today to grow in love and let it flow into your interactions with others?

When we love with the Spirit’s help, it’s transformative—not just for us but for those around us. Our lives become a testimony of God’s presence, drawing others to Him. Let’s invite the Holy Spirit to work in us, producing love that is genuine, selfless, and enduring. By His power, we can live as Christ’s hands and feet in a world that desperately needs His love.

Prayer:
Holy Spirit, thank you for producing love in my heart. Help me to stay connected to you, allowing your love to overflow into my actions and relationships. Teach me to love like Jesus, selflessly and unconditionally, so that others may see your work in me. Amen.
