Love as the Fulfillment of the Law

“Love does no harm to a neighbour. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”
—Romans 13:10 (NIV)

If you could sum up God’s entire law in one word, what would it be? According to Romans 13:10, that word is love. At its core, every commandment God has given us points back to loving Him and loving others. Love doesn’t harm—it protects, uplifts, and seeks the best for others. When we approach life with love as our guiding principle, we naturally fulfill God’s law.

Think about the Ten Commandments. Commands like “Do not steal,” “Do not commit adultery,” or “Do not covet” are all about protecting relationships and respecting others. When love drives our actions, we won’t steal because we value others’ well-being. We won’t lie because we care about trust and honesty. Love simplifies what might otherwise feel like a long list of rules, focusing instead on the heart behind them.

Loving others isn’t always easy. It can be hard to choose patience with a frustrating coworker or extend kindness to someone who’s hurt us. Yet, God’s love for us is our example and source of strength. He loves us unconditionally, even when we fall short. When we let His love transform us, it becomes easier to let that love flow into our interactions with others. Are there areas in your life where love could guide your responses more fully?

Prayer:
Lord, thank you for showing me how love fulfills your commandments. Help me to live with love as my guide, reflecting your heart in my actions and relationships. Teach me to  love others well, even when it’s difficult, and use my life to point others to you. Amen.
