“So Haman took the robe and the horse, and he led Mordecai through the square of the city, proclaiming before him: Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.” — Esther 6:11 (ESV)
Imagine what that walk felt like.
Haman, the prime minister of Persia, the man who had built a gallows specifically to hang Mordecai, the man who had designed an edict to destroy every Jewish person in the empire, was walking through the city square leading a horse. On the horse sat Mordecai, dressed in the king’s robe, wearing the king’s crown. And Haman was shouting for everyone to hear: thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honour.
There is a particular kind of reversal that God arranges, one that does not just rescue the innocent but requires the persecutor to become the instrument of their honour. It is not enough that Mordecai is honoured. Haman specifically is the one leading the horse. The man whose pride could not tolerate a single act of non-deference is now publicly performing the most deferential possible act on behalf of the man he despised.
The Psalms describe this pattern: the pit that the wicked dig, they themselves fall into. The stone that they roll, it returns upon them. Esther is one of the most complete biblical narratives of this principle in action. The gallows Haman built for Mordecai became his own execution site. The honour Haman designed for himself became the honour Mordecai received from Haman’s own hands. Everything Haman arranged against Mordecai was turned back on Haman.
This is not revenge. This is justice as a by-product of divine orchestration. God was not primarily punishing Haman. He was saving His people. Haman’s undoing was a consequence of the same providential movement that was saving Mordecai, not a separate act of divine vengeance but the natural result of a plan that was never Haman’s to control.
Today, release the situation you have been watching, the one where the person acting against you seems to be winning. The walk through the city square has not happened yet. But in God’s economy, those who build gallows sometimes end up leading the horses.
Prayer
Father, I release into your hands the situations where it looks like the wrong person is winning. I do not need to arrange the reversal. You are writing the story, and you know how to use even the enemy’s preparations for your purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen.
