Your Fear Is Also Afraid of You

I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you.”

Joshua 2:9

Rahab’s confession of faith is both profound and inspiring. Despite being a Canaanite and living in a city marked for destruction, Rahab recognized the sovereignty and power of the God of Israel. She acknowledged that God had promised the land of Canaan to the Israelites and that He would undoubtedly fulfill that promise. Her words revealed that the people of Jericho were already aware of God’s supernatural work, which had caused them to be filled with fear.

This is incredibly striking when considering the context. The Israelites, who had been promised this land by God, were themselves struggling with fear and reluctance to take what had been divinely assured to them. Meanwhile, the Canaanites, the supposed enemies, were paralyzed with fear at the prospect of the Israelites actually stepping into their promise. Rahab’s declaration exposes a vital truth: the very things that intimidate us and hold us back from God’s promises are just as fearful of our potential in Christ.

As believers, we frequently face obstacles that seem insurmountable. Whether it’s personal fears, doubts, or external challenges, these can make us hesitant to move forward into what God has called us to. Yet, Rahab’s confession encourages us to realize that these “giants” in our path are not as formidable as they appear. In reality, they may be trembling at the thought of us stepping out in faith and claiming our God-given inheritance.

The key is to trust in God’s promises and move forward despite our fears. When we step out in faith, we discover that God has already paved the way for us. Our enemies are not invincible; our challenges are not unbeatable. God’s supernatural power goes before us, making the way straight and the path clear. We need only to be courageous and trust in His promises.
